On The Move - Modesty, Intelligence, and Beauty Combined!

On The Move - Rocsi

The modest beauty of Honduran and Chilean decent is by far one of the industries most down-to-earth ladies. With live shows, traveling, and being on the constant grind as an everyday blueprint, 106 & Park's Rocsi has little time for herself. And while she's welcomed in the homes of millions each day and looked at as a celebrity of sorts, the homegirl from New Orleans is far from a diva. In fact, she's a self-proclaimed lame who puts lip-gloss on to go grocery shopping. At the end of the day, Rocsi is Rocsi and there isn't much more to it then that. With a scratchy voice and borderline cold, Rocsi took the time out of her hip-hop video hosting schedule to chill and chat with ULM.

How's life at 106?
It is beautiful. It's a blessing. You know you go to work everyday and its not like a job its like a party and you have fun. Plus you don't know what to expect everyday so everyday is a different day and its always fun.

How has your life changed in the last year since you started on the show?
We went from definitely being the newcomers and you know getting adjusted into the show like really owning the show and making it ours. Now people are recognizing that this is Rocsi and Terrence from 106 & Park. It's been a big year for BET in general. The whole network is going through some changes with some of the highest rated shows that they've ever had. So I mean the whole change and everything is coming at a great time.

How was it to follow in the footsteps of Free and Julissa?
How was that transition for you? It wasn't bad. Everybody supported us. The previous hosts, Free and AJ came by the set and they would talk to us and give us advice and stuff like that. And if anything ever happens to us they let us know how they got through it and gives us advice on how we can get through it.

What is the most difficult part of your job?
Trying to figure out what to wear and making sure it's right. (laughs)

Did you move to New York specifically for the show?
Yeah, I moved to New York for the show but before the show I had already been doing radio. I had a radio career of seven years and I was in Chicago. Then I moved to New York so I basically went from radio to television.

Tell me about the difference between radio and television. Aren't they totally different?
They are totally different. Because of the TV and the show I've become more of a girly girl. (laughs) With dressing up and the make-up and caring how I look. Because with radio I could eat what I wanted, dress how I wanted, I didn't care about anything. But you start looking at yourself differently when you see other people seeing you. Now I can't even go to the grocery store without putting some lipgloss on.

How do you stay grounded with your seemingly overnight celebrity?
It's definitely something to get use to everyday because you forget. I'm really bad at that. I just forget. So sometimes you get caught off guard.

What are your thoughts on Latinas in the media today?
I think we're coming up and I think it's a beautiful thing. I don't want to say we're hot right now because that sounds so cliché but I think there's a lot of Latin people now that are starting to get their shine and recognition that they definitely deserve. But as far as my show I don't really look at it like "oh I'm Latin and I work for a Black Network." It's all about hip-hop so Terrance and I don't really look at each other like that we just look at each other as the culture of hip-hop and we love the music and the whole vibe of what we do.

What's important in your life outside of 106?
Of course my family I don't live by them so you know when I can I try to travel to them. They live in Dallas, Texas my brother and my dad. We are always busy and traveling somewhere but if I'm not busy and I don't have to travel I'm definitely kicking it at the house. I'm not going nowhere. I'm the biggest lame you'll ever meet I'll be the first one to tell you. I'll cook for dinner parties and play games and stuff like that. I'm a lame.
